If you are a caregiver, you know how important it is to help your loved one enjoy fresh air, sunshine, and being outdoors if and when possible. It’s good for him/her physically and mentally assuming it’s according to the doctor’s plan of care and is done with safety and security in mind.
During summer, there are a few things to consider when enjoying time outdoors:
- Stay hydrated. It’s so important to stay hydrated. Be sure to drink plenty of water and other clear liquids. Even if you’re not sweating, you can still become overheated.
- Watch for ticks. Summer is the time when ticks can become a problem. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection primarily transmitted by certain types of ticks. Always watch for ticks, and when going back indoors, check to ensure no ticks made there way inside on your skin or in your hair. For more information on Lyme Disease, click here.
- Avoid falls. Walking outside can result in falls if you or your loved one are unsteady. Be careful walking on uneven ground and in grass. Even sidewalks can have uneven areas so beware and be careful!
- Dress appropriately. Wear cool colors and cool clothing when outdoors to avoid overheating. Lighter fabrics and a brimmed hat are a good idea.
- Avoid too much sun. Sun is good for us but can be a problem if you get too much. Avoid sunburn by using a good sunscreen. Ask your doctor about the best sunscreen for your loved ones to ensure they don’t have allergies that could cause problems with certain ingredients included in sunscreen. Light long sleeves and covering exposed skin lightly is always a good option.
Take advantage of summer weather to get your loved one outside if possible. But always exercise extra precautions to keep him or her healthy and safe.
The fresh air and sunshine will be great for both of you!
