It’s important to manage your health if you have been diagnosed with diabetes. And if you haven’t been diagnosed, it’s important to avoid or delay the onset of diabetes with a few lifestyle habits that can make a big difference in your health.
Hallmark Home Health nurses provide education and home care for patients with diabetes. But knowing how to manage your diabetes is just one part of the puzzle. Identifying the signs of diabetes before a diagnosis is also essential.
Symptoms
According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the following symptoms of diabetes are typical. However, some people with type 2 diabetes have symptoms so mild that they go unnoticed.
Common symptoms of diabetes:
- Urinating often
- Feeling very thirsty
- Feeling very hungry – even though you are eating
- Extreme fatigue
- Blurry vision
- Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal
- Weight loss – even though you are eating more (type 1)
- Tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands/feet (type 2)
Prevention and Delay
ADA also says that prevention or delay of Type 2 diabetes is possible. Stay at a healthy weight, eat well and be active are important ways to manage your health and potentially avoid diabetes. Other things to consider include:
- Managing a healthy weight
- Stop smoking or don’t start
- Manage your blood pressure
- Get physical activity consistently
- Monitor and manage your blood glucose
